The University of Montevallo College of Fine Arts seeks a visionary leader to head the newly formed Department of Performing Arts. Formerly the separate departments of Music and Theatre, the Department of Performing Arts combines two strong performing programs into a single department. Offering BFA, BM, BA, and BS degrees, the department serves both majors and non-major alike, encouraging participation in productions and ensembles from across campus. The theatre and music programs are accredited by NAST and NASM respectively. Reporting to the Dean of the College of Fine Arts, the Chair will help guide the direction of the newly formed department, building upon the successes of both programs.
Primarily housed in two buildings on campus, the music and theatre programs of the new Department of Performing Arts produce over 100 events each year, including four mainstage theatre productions in the recently opened Alan and Lindsey Song Center for the Arts. The performing facilities include the 240-seat LeBaron Recital Hall, the 1200-seat Palmer Auditorium, the 300-seat DiscoverShelby Theatre, and the 100-seat Michael and Sue Meadows Black Box Theatre.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Terminal degree in music or theatre
- Five years’ experience teaching at a collegiate level
- Demonstrated administrative and academic leadership
Preferred Qualifications:
- A record of academic accomplishment consistent with the rank of Associate Professor or Professor
- Experience with accreditation standards (NAST, NASM, or similar)
- Experience with academic program development, curricular innovation, and outcomes assessment
Essential Job Duties:
- Oversee all aspects of the department
- Work with faculty to develop the mission, vision, and values for the new department
- Provide yearly review of faculty and staff in the department
- Manage the music and theatre budgets and other department resources
- Oversee the department’s curriculum, including courses and scheduling
- Maintain performance calendars
- Teach two courses per semester
- Perform teaching/creative duties as appropriate (i.e. directing a mainstage performance, coaching chamber ensembles, etc.)
- Maintain positive relationships with support/partner organizations
- Oversee recruitment events and activities
- Provide strategic leadership in maintaining compliance with all regulatory and accrediting bodies
- Cultivate a collegial, collaborative, environment with faculty, students, staff, administrators, and the community
- Other duties, as assigned
