For starters, we are not just a piano school. We started back in 2015 as a software company with the mission to figure out why 83% (or simply put, the majority) of students drop out of piano in the first 3 years. Although it took us a few years, we learned that the problem was systemic. Today we are one of the fastest growing education companies in the country.
Conventional lessons, as you know, are based on a once a week model where the teacher works with a child and then hopefully that child practices every day in preparation for their next lesson. Although this may work for about 2 in 10 students, the large majority of students end up not practicing or “practicing” just before their lesson. Once a week and even twice a week, doesn’t work for almost all children.
The child doesn’t practice. Parents are usually unable to help. And teachers are paid to help only once a week. So each week, the child returns with similar problems to the previous week and the lessons become a time to simply review and practice.
We call this the “practice” problem. And we’ve designed everything we do at Oclef to solve this problem. As an S1 Professor at Oclef, you’ll teach 1:1 lessons and classes, 15 min to 30 min in duration, M-F for about 5.5 hours a day (Monday to Friday). The remainder of your day will be filled with collaborative projects (2 hours) ranging from film scoring for animation to software content development to curriculum design.
