Description
The School of Human Sciences at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is seeking an Assistant Instructor position to also serve as Assistant Coordinator for the Motorcycle Rider Program. This is a 12-month, 100% term non-tenure track appointment based on the Motorcycle Rider Program grant year.
This position is contingent upon receiving grant funding. The final candidate and salary must be approved by the granting agency. Salary and rank are commensurate with experience and background.
Examples of Duties
- Assist in teaching instructor preparation courses including PH346 - MOTORCYCLE INSTRUCTOR TRAINING. Courses include driver (rider) education or instruction, safety principles, adult learning principles, motor skills principles, brain-based learning, attitudinal development, judgment, facilitation, communication, in addition to supervising, and evaluating instructors and course aides. Instruction consists of both classroom and field instruction.
- Teach students in driver (rider) instruction and oversee the teaching of students at various levels of experience and skill in safety aspects of motorcycle operation, skills, safety processes, and strategies. Instruction consists of both classroom and field instruction.
- Assist in overall grant (project) management and reporting to the Illinois Department of Transportation. Manage (assist) the day-to-day operation of the grant.
- Equip training sites. Assist in procuring motorcycles and equipment, manage and maintain motorcycles and other training equipment.
- Develop and distribute course schedules. Prepare reports for course evaluation and document costs for reimbursement.
- Maintain website.
- Work hours are irregular and require travel.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree by date of hire.
Motorcycle safety teaching experience, qualifications, and knowledge.
Valid class M (State of Illinois - motorcycle) driver's license or its equivalent from another state and a safe riding and driving record with no possibility of suspension by date of hire.
Motorcycle Safety Foundation RiderCoach Certification by date of hire.
Possess clear and proficient oral skills.
Must be first aid certified by date of hire. Have an in-depth understanding of the SIU grant project and Illinois Cycle Rider Safety Training Program.
Possess a technical understanding of motorcycle mechanics, the ability to troubleshoot motorcycle mechanical and electrical systems, and experience with maintaining fleet motorcycles.
Have a valid class A CDL (Combination Vehicle) driver's license or its equivalent from another state or must acquire it within 18 months of hire.
Must meet all requirements listed in Motorcycle Rider Program Grant documents.
