Position Summary
The Division of Humanities, Social Science, Media and Arts at Morehouse College invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor of Visual Arts. We are seeking innovators who will lead students to creative outlets for further exposition of the Visual Arts through lectures and seminars surrounding contemporary issues in the field that would be accessible to broad audiences of students and the community. Applicants should demonstrate some level of engagement with influences of the African Diaspora, inclusive of Afro-Futurism, Afro-Surrealism, Black Feminism, LGBTQ issues and/or other formal inquiries into and around the Black experience.The VAP will be expected to teach foundational courses (lecture based) relating to a general understanding of art for non-majors, lower-division major courses and upper-division courses in needed areas. In addition to teaching, applicants are expected to participate in creative work/scholarly activities, student engagement and academic advisement, and service to the college and community. Morehouse College is a student-centered learning environment that emphasizes teaching and experiential learning.
The HSSMA Division offers majors and minors in Art, Art History, Cinema, Television & Emerging Media Studies, Curatorial Studies, Theatre and Performance, Dance Performance & Choreography and Music. Morehouse College is part of the Atlanta University Center Art History + Curatorial Studies Collective. The AUC Art Collective is housed in the Spelman College Department of Art & Visual Culture, which also includes the Digital Moving Image Salon, the Museum of Fine Art and the Spelman College Innovation Lab. A new Center for Innovation & the Arts serves as an interdisciplinary environment that supports and advances experimentation, collaboration, active play, research and the imaginative use of digital technologies.The start date is August 1, 2025.Required Qualifications
Applicants are required to have either an M.F.A. in studio art or a Ph.D. in art history.
Preference will be given to candidates with a concentration in either painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, fiber arts, mural design and a minimum of two to five years' teaching experience. Candidates with a Ph.D. in art history are also invited to apply and will be equally considered. Candidates must have a proven track record of art shows or scholarship and be able to demonstrate interdisciplinary and creative approaches in teaching studio art and art history.
The department is looking for someone who can be committed to the mission of Morehouse College-to develop men with disciplined minds who lead lives of leadership and service by emphasizing the intellectual and character development of its students and by assuming a special responsibility for teaching the history and culture of black people.
At minimum, applicants should be able to:
* Develop course content and other course materials in support of course and learning outcomes and adhere to departmental requirements.
* Prepare, administer, and grade assignments and examinations in a timely manner to inform students about their progress and to provide opportunities that will allow students to succeed.
* Schedule and maintain appropriate office hours proportionate to the instructional assignment and provide timely communication to students utilizing Morehouse network.
* Utilize instructional technology (Banner, Blackboard, and Starfish) required by Morehouse College, including maintaining an online gradebook and keeping accurate records of grades and attendance.Preferred Qualifications
- Terminal degree (or equivalent) in the discipline or in a relevant field.
- Academic and professional credentials to teach in a certain discipline.
- Teaching experience at the collegiate level preferred.
- Experience in or knowledge of related professions.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Applicants are expected to be well versed in teaching a combination of studio art courses in their respective media and/or visual arts survey classes with a focus on the art of the global south and the African diaspora.Compensation
Salary is for service in a 9-month academic year visiting faculty position.
Salary will be disbursed in 12 equal monthly installments.Teaching Responsibility
- Minimum 3/4 teaching load or 21 credit hours annually.
