THE COLLEGE: The College of Health Sciences prepares the next generation of health and human service professionals to improve quality of life and address health disparities in their communities. The College offers five undergraduate degrees in Clinical Lab Science, Health Promotion, Rehabilitation Sciences, Social Work and Kinesiology. There are four master's degrees in the college: Speech-Language Pathology, Public Health, Social Work, and Kinesiology. There are currently three doctoral programs in CHS: Doctor of Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy Doctorate, and a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Health Sciences. College faculty members actively participate in the Interdisciplinary Health Sciences PhD Program. High impact educational experiences enable students to develop leadership, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills, as well as a strong sense of social responsibility through community and global engagement opportunities.
Faculty and students engage in teaching, research, and service incorporating Boyer's Model of the scholarship of discovery, integration, application/engagement, and teaching and learning, all related to applied health sciences (https://www.utep.edu/chs/). The College's facilities and programs are designed to promote interprofessional teaching, learning, research, and community and global engagement initiatives. The College of Health Sciences enjoys a strong and collaborative relationship with a range of local, national and global community partners. THE DEPARTMENT: The Department offers a Bachelor of Social Work and Master of Social Work, which began in Summer 2010. The Department of Social Work's BSW and MSW Program are accredited by the Council of Social Work Education. The BSW Program is the only BSW in the nation to focus on a Border Region. The Department has about 120 undergraduate pre-social work majors, 100 enrolled in the BSW Program, and 60 MSW students. The Department has five tenure-track positions, and six full-time clinical faculty including the present position being recruited. The student body is highly diverse, comprises a Hispanic, bilingual majority, and includes a significant number of first-generation and international students. The highly diverse departmental faculty is active in research programs in behavioral health, child welfare, migrants and refugees, intimate partner violence, aging, and health disparities.

Job Description:
The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) College of Health Sciences invites applications for a full-time Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Work. This is a 9-month appointment with potential for summer teaching. The successful applicant will be a licensed social worker (LMSW, LCSW, and LCSW-S) with an academic doctorate (preferably PhD or DSW) in social work or a related field. Job responsibilities include teaching, some scholarly activity (e.g., manuscript submissions, and conference presentations), and service to the program, college, university, community, and profession. The anticipated appointment date is Fall 2026. The ideal candidate will excel at incorporating active-learning strategies in teaching and social work practice. The successful candidate would have an interest in the cultural aspects of the border, embracing the opportunities to work with underserved groups and to collaborate on initiatives regarding border health and health disparities.
This position represents an excellent opportunity for an outstanding individual to contribute to a program with established bachelor's (BSW), and master's (MSW) programs in social work, as well as an online MSW program beginning Summer 2025. Multiple scholarly opportunities are available in community and clinical settings on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border. Teaching excellence and current scholarship will determine appointment at the Clinical Assistant Professor level.
Requirements:
1) PhD in Social Work, DSW, or earned doctorate in a closely related field (all-but-dissertation doctoral candidates who are close to completion by June 2026 will be considered);
2) an MSW from a CSWE-accredited program;
3) evidence of teaching excellence in a higher education institution;
4) a minimum of five years of post-MSW experience as a practicing social worker;
5) Texas licensed or license-eligible as LMSW and LCSW; History of participation in professional organizations;
6) strong record of community outreach to human service organizations;
7) experience working directly with people from population demographics reflective of our region;
8) the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, and community stakeholders from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds; and
9) Ability to work independently and coordinate teaching with colleagues. Bilingual (English and Spanish) candidates are desirable.
Preferred qualifications: Texas licensed or license-eligible as LCSW-S; at least 2 years of experience in supervising social work students or social work staff; and the potential to deliver a program of filed instruction and teaching in a binational, bilingual environment.
