First Church of Hanover PA is seeking an Organist. This is a part-time position of 15-20 hours per week. The Organist is responsible for providing high-quality organ and piano music for regular worship services, special liturgical events, and other congregational gatherings. This individual works closely with the Pastor/Rector and the Director of Music to ensure that the music enhances the spiritual experience and aligns with the theological themes of the service.
Key Responsibilities
- Service Music: Play the organ (and/or piano) for all Sunday services, including preludes, postludes, offertories, and interludes.
- Hymn Accompaniment: Lead the congregation in singing hymns, psalms, and liturgical responses with clear registration and appropriate pacing.
- Choral Support: Accompany the church choir(s) during rehearsals and performances. Collaborate with the Choir Director to support choral anthems.
- Special Services: Provide music for additional liturgical holidays (e.g., Christmas Eve, Holy Week, Ash Wednesday) and special events (e.g., funerals and weddings, often for additional fees).
- Instrument Stewardship: Monitor the condition of the organ and piano; coordinate with the church office to schedule regular tuning and necessary repairs.
- Collaboration: Participate in music selection meetings to ensure a cohesive flow between the sermon, scripture, and music.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Music (Organ Performance or Sacred Music preferred) or equivalent professional experience.
Technical Skill
Proficiency in organ manual and pedal technique; strong sight-reading and transposition skills.
Experience
Previous experience playing in a liturgical setting and a strong understanding of traditional hymnody.
Soft Skills
Reliability, strong communication, and a collaborative spirit.Preferred Skills
- Ability to improvise based on hymn tunes or liturgical themes.
- Knowledge of various denominational traditions and liturgical calendars.
- Ability to conduct a choir from the console (if the role is a combined Organist/Choir Director position).
Working Conditions
- Part-Time: Usually 15–20 hours per week (including practice time and rehearsals).
- Schedule: Regular Sunday mornings, one weekday evening rehearsal, and holiday availability.
