General Description of the PositionAs the
Assistant Professor of Piano, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality instruction, mentoring students, and advancing the mission of the Music Program. You will be responsible for teaching applied and class piano courses, recruiting and retaining piano majors, contributing to departmental activities, and maintaining an active performance and scholarly presence. You are expected to model excellence in musicianship, pedagogy, and professionalism, while supporting the artistic and academic development of a diverse student body.
Essential Functions & Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities- Provide individualized applied piano instruction to undergraduate music majors and minors.
- Teach class piano courses (Piano I-IV) to both music and non-music majors.
- Assist in developing and revising piano curriculum as needed.
- Recruit high-quality piano students through outreach, auditions, and partnerships with schools and community music programs.
- Maintain an active performance schedule and participate in faculty recitals, student performances, and university events.
- Serve as an academic advisor and mentor to students in the music program.
- Participate in departmental service, including committees, juries, student assessments, and program reviews.
- Foster an inclusive and supportive learning environment in all instructional settings.
Required Skills and Qualifications- Doctorate in Music (DMA or PhD) with an emphasis in Piano Performance or Pedagogy; ABD considered with projected completion within one year.
- Demonstrated excellence as a performer and teacher across multiple styles and repertoires.
- Ability to connect with and support a diverse student population, including those with varying levels of piano proficiency.
- Strong organizational, communication, and collaboration skills.
- Commitment to collegiality, student success, and continuous professional development.
Qualification Standards- University-level teaching experience.
- Experience with collaborative piano or chamber music.
- Record of student recruitment and successful studio development.
- Ability to contribute to general music courses (e.g., Music Appreciation, Theory, History, Industry) is a plus.
