DescriptionThe Department of Music at Stony Brook seeks a violinist with an exemplary reputation, profound understanding of their craft, strong ability to communicate their vision, and well versed in the solo, chamber music, and orchestral literature. The appointee will be an excellent violinist in the performance of classical music, with a deep knowledge of, and commitment to, the music of our time and skill in its performance. We seek a violinist who will successfully recruit and teach violin students on the masters and doctoral levels, and who will coach chamber music. Experience performing music of the Baroque era will be considered an asset. This position will carry substantial administrative expectations, including the ability to serve in departmental leadership roles. The appointee will be open-minded, inspirational, and dedicated, and serve as a mentor to their students while having a positive effect on the Department of Music community. The Department of Music at Stony Brook University is primarily a graduate program, and the majority of the graduate students in the string program will be DMA candidates.
QualificationsRequired QualificationsNational and/or international reputation as an outstanding violinist, experienced in the solo, chamber music, and concerto repertoire. Excellence as a violinist in the performance of Western Classical music (early music, contemporary classical music, etc). Experience teaching and mentoring doctoral students.
Preferred QualificationsAt least six years of experience coaching graduate chamber music. At least six years of success in recruiting graduate violinists. Administrative skills: experience starting a chamber series, or in developing relationships across a campus community. Experience as a committee chair, or in other administrative roles within an academic department. Discography demonstrating stature in the field
