Job SummaryThe School of Music at the University of Southern Mississippi seeks to hire a faculty member in the area of Music Education at the rank of Visiting Instructor. This is a one-year position with the potential for extension, though the School anticipates initiating a tenure-track search during the 2026-2027 academic year.
The anticipated hire date for this search is August 1, 2026.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities - Teach undergraduate elementary and secondary general music courses.
- Teach undergraduate courses in instrumental music education.
- Teach other undergraduate or graduate courses in the music education curriculum and/or supervise student teachers in order to meet a 4x4 teaching load.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum QualificationsMaster of Music or Music Education degree.
Evidence of success in elementary and secondary general music instruction.
Evidence of success as instructor of music teacher preparation courses.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities- Familiarity with general music programs at the elementary school level.
- Ability to learn various software programs, including online teacher management systems.
- May require travel to observe student field placements.
Preferred QualificationsTerminal degree in the area of specialization.
A minimum of five years of elementary music teaching experience.
Brass or woodwind background/teaching experience.
Training or certification in elementary/general music pedagogies (e.g., Orff Schulwerk, Kodály, Dalcroze, Modern Band, world drumming, or similar approaches).
