Position Objective and Summary
Objective: The Organist supports the Church’s Music Ministry by providing organ music as part of the worship experience
Summary: This position provides organ music during worship services and serves as accompanist for the Chancel Choir. The instrument at Wesley Church is an Austin pipe organ, installed in 1991, featuring 3,864 pipes in 65 ranks with 4 manuals in 7 divisions.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Duties and Responsibilities
- Work with the Director of Music and the Directing Pastor to coordinate the organ music for worship services. This includes the research, selection, practice, and performance of music selections appropriate for the preludes, offertories, interludes, communion, hymns, and postludes.
- Accompany the Chancel Choir at rehearsals and worship services on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings.
- Be available to accompany, or substitute for, other music ensembles on an occasional basis.
- Arrange for substitute organist when not available in conjunction with the Director of Music
- Identify and communicate problems with the organ to the Director Music and work with the organ technician to tune and maintain the organ
- Provide organ music for special services, weddings, and funerals at the Church at various times throughout the year as stipulated at time of hire
- Be proficient in the performance of Symphony No. 5 in F minor, V. Toccata (Widor) (an Easter tradition of the congregation's)
- Perform other duties as may become necessary in the team ministry of the Church and assigned by the Director of Music or Staff Parish Relations Committee
- Qualifications, Skills, Abilities and Education Requirements
Education Level: Bachelor’s or Master’s Music degree in organ performance (preferred)

- High degree of musical knowledge and ability
- Good sight-reading skills
- Exhibit professional skills, appearance, and conduct
