Director of Bands Description - The Director of Bands is responsible for the orchestration and coordination of all facets of band programs that attend student growth and learning, spirit enhancement, and university representation. With specific responsibility for the marching band, the Director functions as a major actor in recruitment and enrollment management. The position has an active interface with the music faculty (or be a faculty member) towards achieving student growth and learning as well as necessary university representation. Duties – In ensuring the coordination, quality, and symmetry of the university band program the Director among others, has the following specific duties: • Leads collaborative discussions among faculty and staff to arrive at a consensus/awareness of an “Allen Way” regarding band programs and performances. • Executes a recruitment strategy that delivers an appropriately sized and quality marching band. • Serves as a good steward of university assets: budget, instruments, uniforms, etc. • Prepares and fields a marching band of observable excellence in both sight and sound. • Fosters structures, behaviors, and discipline that enhance student persistence. • Models professional and personal behaviors that further the interest of the band program and the University. Qualifications – At least five years of demonstrated success as a head band director and a master’s degree; preference will be given to: 1) applicants with sufficient mastery to teach an applied music course, 2) skill in arranging music, and 3) capacity to use technology (software) to arrange and plan performances. Skills/Experiences – The incumbent must have had direct experiences in HBCU related band culture and performance. Additional skills and experiences include: •Ability to formulate and communicate ideas in oral and written forms that will be effective in recruiting and enrolling students. • Experience in and capacity to deploy full and part-time band staff to achieve a quality program. • Ability to schedule and execute all phases of performance preparation that attends the needs of students and the ultimate performance product. • Capacity to develop management strategies that effectively use scholarships to achieve enrollment goals and band quality.
