Position Title: Contemporary Worship Music Director
Part-time position: Aprrox. 10 hours/week
Accountability: Pastor and the Board of Elders
Purpose: The purpose of this position is to assist the pastor in leading the divine services, and other events in the congregation, by leading God’s people in the singing and playing of contemporary Christian music.
Position Summary: The Contemporary Worship Music Leader plans, leads, and coordinates all aspects of the contemporary worship music program at Bethany Lutheran Church under the guidance of the pastor. This individual ensures each service is musically excellent, theologically grounded, and liturgically appropriate to the season of the church year. The position requires a blend of musical skills, organizational discipline, and spiritual discernment.
Primary Responsibilities: The main responsibilities of the Contemporary Worship Music Director are as follows:
Collaborate with the Senior Pastor in planning and leading Contemporary Christian Music in our Contemporary Divine Services (Sundays at 11:00 am) that is in agreement with the teachings of Holy Scripture and the Lutheran Confessions. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Selecting service songs aligned with the weekly Scripture lessons, sermon theme, and the liturgical season (Christmas, Easter, etc..);
- Curating and maintaining worship music repertoire and scheduling to maintain both variety and familiarity;
- Communicating information to the church office staff for the bulletin and newsletter and attend meetings, as requested by the Pastor;
- Managing the song usage database, volunteer scheduling, and CCLI licensing using WorshipTools software or similar resources;
- Leading weekly rehearsals with a rotating team of volunteer vocalists, instrumentalists; also coordinating with Bethany’s sound/AV tech.
Working alongside other staff members to provide music for funerals and weddings when available.
- Additional compensation will be discussed on a case-by-case basis for weddings and funerals.
Collaborating with the Trustees and Elders of the congregation to ensure equipment is properly acquired and maintained.
Other duties as required by the Pastor.
Interaction: The Contemporary Worship Music Director position requires considerable interface and interaction with groups such as staff, music volunteers, and other congregational members. External interaction with the public is also often required. This may include, but is not limited to, members of the community, other congregations, and our District and Synod.
Qualifications: Formal music training, piano or guitar proficiency, and a strong singing voice are required. While membership to the congregation is not required, applicants must be willing to perform the duties of this position in accordance to the doctrinal standards of the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod.
Pay: $30.00 - $40.00 per hour
