Job DescriptionPosition OverviewEast Tennessee State University Department of Music seeks an adjunct instructor of percussion. The successful candidate will teach weekly applied lessons beginning in the Fall 2026 semester. Other courses may be assigned based on candidate strengths. These include percussion ensemble, percussion methods, topics in world percussion, and drumset lessons. In addition to expertise in classical traditions, candidates with experience in jazz and/or non-Western traditions are strongly encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities- Teach weekly undergraduate applied lessons in coordination with other percussion faculty
- Develop syllabi, other course materials, and submit course grades in a timely manner
- Attend and assess percussion juries each semester
- Attend percussion studio concerts and events, including degree recitals, percussion ensemble concerts, studio recitals, and festivals
- Attend and assess prospective student auditions
- Teach percussion ensemble and percussion methods depending on departmental needs and candidate expertise/availability
- OPTIONAL responsibilities can include hourly work with the marching band (paid separately). This job is posted separately, but it maybe the same person.
Required Qualifications- Earned masters degree in percussion performance or an advanced degree in music with relevant professional and artistic experience
- Studio teaching experience including collegiate-level instruction
- Record of high-level musicianship in solo, chamber, and/or ensemble settings
Preferred Qualifications- Earned doctorate in percussion performance
- Familiarity with K-12 teaching and/or instrumental pedagogy
- Commitment to student recruitment and growth/stability of the percussion studio
- Experience directing percussion ensemble and/or teaching percussion methods
- Expertise in jazz and/or non-Western traditions
