Job Summary
Trinity Lutheran Church is seeking a dynamic and passionate Director of Music Ministries & Primary Pianist/Organist to lead and inspire our congregation’s musical worship experience. This vital role is designed to develop and administer a meaningful worship and music ministry. The successful candidate will serve as the primary pianist and organist, while also guiding the development of our music ministry, nurturing talent, and promoting a culture of musical excellence and spiritual growth. Leading by example, this music director is meant to coordinate music staff and volunteers in glorifying God while encouraging the use and growth of their musical gifts.
The position is classified as exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act and requires a commitment of 20-30 hours per week, which includes attending weekly worship services.
Responsibilities
1. Conduct the music of Trinity’s Sunday and Wednesday worship services, funerals, and weddings.
2. Play piano and/or organ at services, funerals, and weddings, as determined by the style of worship/music. Schedule and prepare a qualified substitute for services as needed.
3. Schedule choirs, ensembles, and individual musicians for worship services, funerals, and weddings. In collaboration with the pastors, develop an annual schedule for worship and themed plans for services. Determine musicians, hymns, and songs, and prepare monthly schedules for the pastors, Administrative Coordinator, choir directors, and musicians.
4. Oversee directors of the Trinity Choir, Handbell Choir, and Children’s Choir and assist them with music selection and planning. Lead the selection of a director when needed, or choose to direct a choir personally if availability allows.
5. Meet and rehearse with choirs, directors, and musicians as necessary while scheduling the use of rehearsal space on the church calendar accordingly. Communicate with couples to plan weddings and with families as needed in advance of funerals.
6. Encourage teamwork and support. Provide for both the quality of music and the growth of musicians, with particular focus on involving young people and developing their gifts. Balance expectations with empowerment.
7. Supervise and communicate with the Audio-Video Assistant in the setup and takedown of the Sanctuary and operation of sound and video systems.
8. Create and maintain an annual budget in consultation with the Worship & Music Team. Order music and worship supplies when needed.
9. Manage maintenance of all musical instruments (e.g., piano tuning schedules, reservoirs for humidifiers) and sound equipment.
10. Collaborate with the pastors, fellow staff members, and other church leaders in integrating God’s gift of music into ministry wherever necessary and possible.
11. With the pastors, review weekly worship materials (draft slides and bulletins).
12. Consider, approve, and respond to requests for use of the Sanctuary, rehearsal spaces, pianos, organ, other instruments, and sound equipment, with appropriate stewardship.
13. Coordinate and manage musical events outside of worship services. Seek to connect with the larger community.
14. Prepare articles, visuals, and social media posts to promote music ministries, special services, and events.
15. Serve on the Worship & Music Team and assist with planning the team meetings.
16. Meet weekly with the pastors and attend weekly staff meetings.
17. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Comprehensive knowledge of sacred music and liturgy. Fundamental desire to glorify God while collaborating with others in sharing their God-given gifts.
- Strong musical ability, especially with the piano and organ. Familiarity with various musical styles. Humility that corresponds to ability.
- Weekly availability on Sunday mornings, Wednesday evenings, and Tuesday mornings for meetings. Flexibility and priority in scheduling time for church functions.
- Excellent interpersonal, relational, and communication skills.
- Competence with audio-video technology and proficiency with computer software, especially Microsoft Office programs.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to multitask.
Pay: $30,000.00 - $38,000.00 per year
