Organist/Pianist for Traditional Worship
Morrison United Methodist Church, Leesburg FL, is searching for a part-time organist/pianist to share a position with another person.
Primary Expectations/ Responsibilities
After hymn-playing, the number one responsibility would be truly excellent choral accompanying skills. The person hired should be available by Labor Day of 2026 to alternate on a regular basis with a second organist who is already in place. Both organists would be expected to play two Sundays per month (the exact Sundays varying month by month, depending on personal schedules and specific needs of the choir). “On site" responsibilities entail a Thursday evening choir rehearsal and one Sunday morning service at 11 AM, usually preceded by a 10 AM "choir call". Choral accompaniments are, in most cases, played on the grand piano in our church sanctuary. The organist plays on hymns and choral responses and usually furnishes a prelude and postlude. In terms of the choral literature: under Susan Brandt, our current director, we typically sing works by composers or arrangers such as Joel Raney, Tom Fettke, Mary McDonald, and others of that ilk, interspersed at times with choral literature of a somewhat more "classical" nature. The director is well-organized and copies of upcoming anthems are generally available well in advance.

- Meet with choir director on a regular basis.
- Arrange for substitutes when absent.
- 10 to 12 hours per week required on a regular basis for preparation, rehearsals and services, with additional time required during the liturgically busiest times of the year (Advent/Christmas and Holy Week/Easter). Additional practice time to meet the candidate’s own standards may be needed as (s)he deems necessary.
- A teachable spirit and willingness to learn Morrison’s culture and values. Our mission is to “Connect people to God’s transforming love through worship, discipleship, fellowship, and service. We are asking our staff and members to prioritize purpose over preference.
- Work well as a part of the worship team / ministry.
- Organ proficiency at the level of at least an undergraduate degree in organ (or equivalent training) and additional skills as a piano accompanist.
- Must be able to follow and collaborate with the choir director.
- Ability to occasionally conduct from organ console as required by the choir director is a plus.
- Must be able to work collaboratively with other members of the staff and the choir.
