Job Title
Instructor of Liturgical Music
Summary
This part-time instructor of liturgical music shares in the responsibility for the advancement of the Jesuit mission of the service of faith and the promotion of justice by teaching and planning for all liturgical music in Campus Ministry, often as the lead musician.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Instructs, coordinates, plans and leads all Liturgical and Choral music. This includes preparations for as well as leading students to provide music for liturgical and prayer experiences offered through Campus Ministry. This includes Sunday evenings, holy days of obligations, and major university liturgies (e.g., Mass of the Holy Spirit, Christmas Carroll Eve, and Baccalaureate Mass).
- Develop, in collaboration with the Campus Ministry team, a vision for liturgical music at John Carroll and establish a repertoire of music that reflects this vision.
- Coordinate the hiring and payment of additional and substitute musicians as necessary.
- Recruit and develop student musicians and cantors in collaboration with JCU musical instructors
- Rehearse with students on Sundays before 9 pm mass and one other time during the week as appropriate
- Collaborate with the liturgy coordinator and meet periodically with the liturgy team.
- Discuss and plan for any anticipated conflicts with the Director of Campus Ministry prior to the start of each semester.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in pastoral ministry, theology or related field
- A sincere desire to operate within the university’s Jesuit Catholic mission
- Interest in understanding and advancing John Carroll’s mission to inspire individuals to excel in learning, leadership, and service in the region and in the world.
- Ability to play the piano/organ as well as lead a choral ensemble.
- Highly developed communication skills (written and verbal)
- Practicing person of faith
Preferred Qualifications
- Training in Ignatian spirituality and Jesuit mission.
- Experience advancing the Jesuit mission of higher education.
Normal Work Location, Hours and Conditions
This position works in person from our campus in University heights, Ohio. On average, this position requires 8 – 10 hours of work per week with the busiest times occurring during the academic year. University core business hours are generally 8:30 am – 5:00 pm. However this position will require work to be performed outside of normal business hours based on department operations.
Physical Requirements
Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other office locations and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

Compensation & Benefits
Starting salary will be $9,500 – $12,500 per year, commensurate with experience.
