Description
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Program performance repertoire, prepare and conduct concert season:
- Create the annual rehearsal and performance schedule for concerts.
- Design each concert performance, including any theme development, integration of guest artists, ensembles, soloists and visual elements.
- Identify, audition, select and coach soloists and small group ensembles as needed.
- Lead and inspire the choir in weekly Tuesday night rehearsals and seasonal retreats (currently one in fall and one in spring), with a focus on vocal technique, skill building, musical interpretation, and overall performance quality.
- Work with section leaders and foster a positive, supportive environment where singers are encouraged to excel.
- Determine and collaborate with accompanist and Assistant Director to provide sectional rehearsals as needed.
- Demonstrate efficient and advanced skills in rehearsal techniques for singers from a variety of musical experiences and skills, while maintaining a welcoming atmosphere to encourage singer development and retention.
- Assist in recruitment and retention of singers; conduct auditions and reauditions (if appropriate) to ensure a high standard of vocal and musical proficiency.
Organizational Collaboration
- Engage regularly with the Board of Directors, offer strategic input on artistic and organizational goals.
- Attend Board meetings (typically held bi-monthly during the season and occasionally during the summer) to provide status of artistic programs and projects.
- Present both annual and multi-year artistic plans for Board approval; repertoire is expected to range from traditional choral offerings to innovative pieces.
- Contribute input for the annual budget in collaboration with the Board Treasurer and operate within the approved budget for programs.
- Participate in fundraising and donor cultivation by collaborating with development and special events.
Promotion and Outreach
- Collaborate with the Board and member committees to engage with the community, expand BCS’s brand visibility, chorus outreach and extend audience reach.
- Be an ambassador for BCS, build and maintain relationships with other artistic directors, community groups, ensembles, and Indiana University to explore opportunities for collaborations.
- Participate with chorus leadership on logistics and artistic details for outreach projects, planning details for community performances.
Requirements
- Minimum of a master’s degree in music with preference for doctoral degree in choral conducting.
- Demonstrated success in conducting a diverse repertoire in a variety of styles.
- Experience in successfully conducting and working with a community-based chorus, with various musical skills and experience.
- Flexibility in working with a diverse group of volunteers.
- Experience in successfully conducting and coaching choral ensembles, instrumental ensembles, and professional soloists.
- Ability to guide experienced amateur singers in choral techniques, vocal production, musicianship, languages, and historical context of music.
- Ability to challenge and inspire singers to meet the highest possible musical standards.
- Interest in exciting concert programming, with primary goal to engage and grow audiences with moving and memorable live performances.
