TITLE: INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC/BAND TEACHER: BMS for 2025-2026 School Year
REPORTS TO: BMS Principal
EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Regular, full time
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
POSITION SUMMARY: Assist students with the development of the skills and knowledge that lead to musical literacy and an appreciation of the arts.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Organize a marching band and concert band(s) by auditioning enrolled students and assigning them to the appropriate positions.
2. Provide instruction that will develop the bands for their purposes and for the events at which they are scheduled to perform.
3. Establish a safe, but challenging, environment for students, including reasonable guidelines and appropriate consequences for behavior.
4.. Prepare clear and timely lesson plans that contain appropriate teaching methods and demonstrate knowledge of the students’ skill levels.
5. Make effective use of resources and materials, and care for them in a responsible manner, including making basic repairs of musical instruments.
6. Order supplies and equipment.
7. Keep accurate and detailed records, according to district and building rules; for example, attendance, grades and assessments.
8. Prepare adequately for substitute teachers.
9. Observe the adopted daily building schedule, including starting and ending times for teachers and students, and perform all assigned duties.
10. Attend all teachers’ meetings, unless excused.
11. Serve on committees, and participate in school and community activities in a professionally responsible manner.
12. Work cooperatively with classroom teachers, administrators and support staff.
13. Learn and implement the administrative procedures associated with the teaching assignment.
14. Engage in continuous professional growth, including attending training sessions as assigned. Complete a professional development plan according to procedures adopted by the school district.
15. Use sound judgment, tact and diplomacy when interacting with students, parents and the community, and maintain the confidentiality of information that is not public domain.
16. Serve as a role model in the practice of ethical principles, responsible behavior and democratic values.
17. Work collaboratively with community partners.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Work with student teachers if needed.
2. Maintain an appropriate personal appearance.
3. Observe all safety and health regulations of the school district.
4. Perform other duties as assigned by the High School Principals.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Bachelor’s degree in music education from an accredited college or university.
2. Appropriate State of Ohio teaching certificate/license.
3. Alternative to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board of Education may find appropriate.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
1. Knowledge of a variety of instructional designs and methods.
2. Ability to teach the basic skills of a marching band and a concert band.
3. Ability to work effectively with others in many different situations.
4. Knowledge of adolescent development and age appropriate activities.
5. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
6. Normal hearing.
7. Well developed organizational and problem solving skills.
8. Basic knowledge of computer technology, or willingness to acquire and appropriately apply such knowledge.
EQUIPMENT OPERATED:
1. Various office machines and educational equipment; for example, computers, calculators, fax machines and laminating machines.
2. Keyboard with computer capabilities (Midi).
3. Stereo equipment, TV/DVD, slide projectors.
4. Musical instruments.
5. Electronic tuners, metronomes, instrument repair tools.
ADDITIONAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
1. Potential exposure to blood or other bodily fluids and tissue.
2. Potential interaction with unruly people.
3. Occasional operation of a vehicle in inclement weather; that is, being prepared to come to school on all scheduled days, except calamity days.
4. Must be available for education related purposes outside the instructional day when requested to do so under reasonable terms.
5. Regular requirement to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, see, read, reach, lift and stretch with hands and arms, stoop, crouch, and kneel.
6. Regular requirement to lift, carry, push, and pull various items; for example, equipment and supplies, up to 25 lbs.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Length of Employment: One Year Limited Contract
