Job Description:Assistant Professor of Music (Director of Bands)-Tenure track
JOB SUMMARY:The Department of Music at Saginaw Valley State University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Music (Director of Bands), starting July 1, 2026. The Director of Bands will assume artistic leadership of the entire band program, consisting of the Cardinal Marching Band, Athletic Pep Band, Wind Ensemble, and Concert Band. In addition, the successful candidate will teach courses in either Music Theory, Music History, or Music Education, based on the candidate's interest and background. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to teaching excellence, an ability to engage a broad spectrum of students, and a willingness to lead in departmental and University service, including recruitment and retention initiatives and mentoring students. Candidates should have a research/creative activity record/agenda aligned with undergraduate education.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION:- DMA or PhD in Music; ABD will be considered if the doctorate is completed by July 1, 2026.
- Evidence of successful leadership of a college-level band program
- Evidence of collegiate-level teaching in either Music Theory, Music History, or Music Education
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and have the ability to learn new software quickly.
- Experience and ability to positively interact with all members of the campus community.
- Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodations.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:- K-12 teaching experience
- Experience in recruiting and retention initiatives
WORKING CONDITIONS:- Duties are generally performed inside and not exposed to adverse conditions.
