The Music Department at Jackson State University is accepting applications for its Assistant/Associate Professor of Music-Low Brass position.
Duties:
- Manage and maintain an applied studio through active recruitment.
- Provide weekly private lessons for all tuba and euphonium students.
- Prepare students for juries, recitals, and large ensemble performances.
- Coach and direct chamber music ensembles.
- Conduct a large ensemble, contributing to the overall performance program.
- Recruit talented tuba and euphonium students to the university.
- Facilitate a positive and supportive culture within the music department.
- Attend student juries and recitals to provide constructive feedback and realistic assessments.
- Collaborate with faculty and staff to support a healthy and vibrant university community.
- Coordinate, host and recruit for a Low Brass Studies festival on the JSU campus for current and prospective students.
- Advise and supervise student activities such as competitions, conferences, festivals, events and outreach performances.
- Work with community music programs.
- Participate in faculty collaborative performances.
- The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to student success, an ability to motivate and guide musicians at all levels, and a dedication to fostering an inclusive and supportive educational environment.
- Maintain ongoing artistic and/or scholarly research agenda to include performances, grantsmanship, and publications.
- Appropriate departmental, college, and university service is required.
- Active affiliation and participation in professional organizations related to the discipline.
- Other instructional and service responsibilities determined by candidates' qualifications and departmental needs as assigned by the chair.
Qualifications:
- A minimum of three (3) years of collegiate teaching experience with an active artistic performance profile at the local and national level.
- Master's Degree required, terminal degree (DMA) in Tuba or Euphonium Performance, Instrumental Pedagogy, or related field preferred.
- Distinction in artistic accomplishments is highly desirable, minimum of three (3) years teaching experience preferred in higher education and artistic/performance experience at the local, national, and international level.
- Exceptional teaching skills on tuba, euphonium required and proficiency skills on additional brass instruments.
- Proven record for recruitment and retention as well as experience with maintaining an outstanding applied studio.
- Experience with chamber music coaching is preferred.
- Experience with grantsmanship, community engagement, and fundraising is beneficial.
