The Music Department at Alma College invites applications for an Assistant/Associate Professor of Music and Director of Bands. This is a full-time, tenure-track position beginning August 2026. The standard teaching load for this position is six units throughout the academic year.
The Department seeks a highly qualified conductor and pedagogue as well as an inspiring leader who can serve musicians at a wide variety of musical stages. In addition to leading the concert and marching bands as artistic director, teaching responsibilities will include courses in conducting, private lessons, music education, pedagogy and other cognate areas. Other academic responsibilities include recruiting for the instrumental program and advising undergraduate students.
The ideal candidate will have broad experience in concert band conducting and literature, marching arts, experience teaching at the high school and collegiate level, a commitment to sustained recruitment for the instrumental programs, dedication to stylistically diverse and creative programming, experience leading creative collaborative efforts on campus and throughout a community, and the ability to teach lessons in their primary instrumental area.
A terminal degree (Ph.D. or D.M.A.) is desired, but ABD status or a Master’s degree (M.M. or M.F.A.) with significant experience and demonstrated excellence in conducting and education will be considered.
