Job Summary
Lord of Life Lutheran Church (LoL) is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA). Lord of Life maintains two worship sites – one in Clifton, VA and the other in Fairfax, VA. Lord of Life is an intergenerational and intentionally welcoming congregation that values transformational service, grounded in the heart of Jesus, for the sake of all.
Qualifications:
- Ability to create an atmosphere of worship that encourages congregational participation and engagement
- Comfortable supervising a team of volunteers
- Capable of recruiting and providing guidance to musicians and vocalists, helping them develop their skills and grow in their faith
- Knowledge of traditional hymnody
- Demonstrates a vibrant and growing relationship with God in their own Christian life of faith
- Demonstrates a commitment to the mission and goals of Lord of Life
Job Duties:
Sanctuary Choir Director
- Selects anthems following the theme of the particular Sunday and its position in the church year
- Maintains the adult choral music library (~700 titles)
- Provides new music and coordinates rehearsal plans with accompanist in advance of rehearsal
- Schedules instrumentalists as needed to support choral anthems
Lord of Life is also hiring for the following positions and would consider combining the roles in any combination if a candidate met the qualifications for each role.
Fairfax Music Director
- Assists the Pastors in planning all music for worship services throughout the church year, including Christmas Eve, Holy Week, and the midweek services in Advent and Lent. Contributes to the development of liturgies and themes used in worship.
- Selects and plans liturgical, hymnal, and contemporary music for traditional, blended, and contemporary services at the Fairfax site; curates the congregation’s core body of worship music and ensures all lyrics and seasonal selections (including choir and handbell anthems) are appropriate and properly licensed for livestreaming.
- Manages all music licensing and reporting for the Fairfax site, ensuring all worship content is properly covered for livestreaming and maintaining current membership.
- Plans the yearly schedule for the Fairfax music ministry, assigning which services each ensemble will support, and schedules music rehearsals.
- Ensure the instruments at the Fairfax site are in good working order, arranging for maintenance and repair as needed.
- Coordinates with Office Manager when any outside group wishes to use the church for concerts, recitals, or other music and performance events
- Drafts and administers an annual budget for music ministries in collaboration with the Clifton Music Director
- Writes the annual report for the Worship and Music Ministries in collaboration with the Clifton Music Director
- Coordinates the hiring of outside musicians/substitutes as needed to support the Fairfax services
Organist
- Serves as primary organist/accompanist for all worship services (both traditional and contemporary services), including Christmas Eve, Holy Week, and the midweek services in Advent and Lent) at the Fairfax site.
- Has first right of refusal for weddings and funerals.
Handbell Choir Director
- Selects handbell anthems following the theme of the particular Sunday and its position in the church year
- Maintains the handbell music library and equipment, which includes 5 octaves of Malmark bells and 5 octaves of Malmark chimes, arranging for repair and replacement as needed.
Contemporary Band Director
- Lead and perform contemporary music for worship services, including selecting songs, preparing music, and leading the congregation in singing
- Ensures selected music is covered by our current music licenses
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $6,500.00 - $7,500.00 per year
Work Location: In person
