Music Associate (Part-Time / Internship Eligible)
Compensation: $100–$150 per service (commensurate with experience); 1099 Independent Contractor
Time Commitment: Sundays, approximately 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. (rehearsal prior to the 10:30 a.m. service), remote preparation, seasonal services (Christmas Eve, Holy Week, etc.)
Internship Option: This position may be eligible to serve as a paid internship for college credit.
Position Overview
We are seeking a Music Associate to support congregational worship in a blended service that includes both traditional hymns and contemporary songs. This position leads the band for contemporary selections (usually one song per service) and provides instrumental support alongside the organist and singers for traditional hymnody. This position works with the pastor and emphasizes musical leadership that facilitates worship rather than performance.
Primary Responsibilities
- Lead a blend of contemporary and traditional music for Sunday worship.
- Lead contemporary songs from guitar/piano and traditional hymns from a melodic instrument.
- Provide musical direction during services, setting tempo, style, key, etc. to support congregational singing.
- Collaborate with the organist, musicians, and singers in leading traditional hymns.
- Arrange or adapt music as needed for available instruments and skill levels (lead sheets for musicians, lyrics for singers).
- Coordinate with sound and technology volunteers.
- Encourage and help develop volunteer musicians as appropriate.
Qualifications
- Strong musical proficiency, both instrumental and vocal.
- Ability to lead contemporary songs from acoustic guitar or piano and hymns from
- Ability to improvise accompaniment from a lead sheet.
- Ability to accompany from a melodic instrument (e.g., violin, viola, cello, flute, or similar) for traditional hymns.
- Ability to arrange and notate music as needed.
- Experience leading small ensembles/bands/vocalists.
- Ability to work collaboratively with pastoral staff and volunteers.
- Strong organizational and preparation skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with Reformed worship and hymnody.
- Interest in mentoring or developing volunteer musicians.

- Prioritizes congregational participation over performance.

Reporting & Collaboration
- Reports to the pastor.
- Works alongside other music leaders (organist, accompanists, choir director).
