The Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Technology in Music and Related Arts (TIMARA) to begin July 1, 2024. We seek a colleague with substantial experience and exceptional vision who will serve an active role in program development and curriculum design while engaging students and faculty from across the institution.

About

The successful candidate will have a body of creative work, research, and accomplishment with an emerging national/international reputation in music and technology. TIMARA welcomes applicants specializing in a wide range of creative practices where music and emerging sound technologies, broadly defined, are an integral part of their work. These practices may include, but are not limited to, electronic music composition, performance, improvisation, interactive audiovisual media, immersive environments, experimental songwriting/production, DSP programming, interdisciplinary collaboration, and creative coding. The successful candidate will have experience teaching undergraduate students as well as a commitment to creating an equitable and inclusive learning environment in a conservatory and liberal arts setting. We are especially interested in candidates from historically marginalized and under-represented backgrounds in the field of music technology.

The ideal candidate will both support and expand upon TIMARA’s current curriculum, which includes core courses in electroacoustic music, real-time techniques, surround sound and immersive audio, and electronic music performance, as well as advanced courses on a wide variety of topics including DSP, studio recording, cultivating a creative practice, interactive sensor systems, musical gesture, mixed media circuits, audio-visual composition, and sound installations. In addition to teaching core courses, candidates will be expected to develop advanced course offerings based on their own areas of expertise. Teaching responsibilities include classroom teaching, private instruction and mentorship for degree recitals, weekly studio class, and possibly ensemble coaching.

The Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, founded in 1865, is the nation’s oldest continuously operating conservatory, and the only major music school in the country linked with a preeminent liberal arts college. Students are enrolled in undergraduate programs leading to the Bachelor of Music in performance, jazz studies, composition, technology in music and related arts, and musicology. Oberlin also offers graduate programs leading to the Master of Music in conducting, the Master of Music in performance on historical instruments, the Master of Fine Arts in piano technology, as well as artist diplomas.

Technology in Music and Related Arts (TIMARA) combines traditional music skills with exploration of the latest sound technologies for musical expression. TIMARA offers a structured course of study that emphasizes the application of technology as a resource for careers in composition, performance, research, and music technology related industries.

Responsibilities

Teaching technological creativity focusing on media and interdisciplinary collaboration;
Teaching introductory core classes and advanced courses related to the candidate’s areas of specialization;
Mentoring students on artistic, academic, and professional matters; and participating in committees, meetings, and activities of the TIMARA Department.

Qualifications

Doctoral degree preferred in music technology, composition, computer music, or related fields, or equivalent professional experience with a body of creative work and research that represents a dedication to the production of innovative music;
Teaching experience in electronic music and technological creativity in both private-study and classroom settings;
Expertise in additional areas is desirable. These might include, but are not limited to, performance/improvisation, electronic music composition, interactive audiovisual media, interdisciplinary approaches, technological innovation, and creative coding;
Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a dynamic artistic community.
