Job SummaryThe Mary Morgan Moore Department of Music at Lamar University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Music (Trumpet), beginning Fall 2026. We seek an artist-teacher with the enthusiasm, vision, and leadership to build and sustain a thriving trumpet studio, contribute meaningfully to a growing department, and collaborate across the brass area and the Department of Music.
In this position, the successful candidate will develop, sustain, and promote the trumpet studio with an emphasis on recruitment and retention, as well as mentoring students throughout their degree. Excellent one-on-one trumpet teaching skills, as well as a demonstrated ability to work with, understand, and inspire students of all skill levels and backgrounds, are paramount. This individual will also demonstrate the ability to work effectively with the department's instrumental ensembles and will participate in departmental faculty performances, specifically in collaboration with colleagues. Candidates with a background in performing and teaching a wide variety of musical genres, as well as those with experience at school(s) like Lamar University as a student or instructor, are encouraged to apply.
The faculty member in this position will be expected to establish a strong reputation as a teacher and performer. Active participation in faculty performances, including the Cardinal Brass Quintet, is a key recruitment and performance vehicle. A core expectation of this position is to lead a proactive recruitment and retention strategy for the trumpet studio and to support brass-area enrollment goals. This candidate is expected to contribute to the brass chamber program, the annual Brass Festival, and departmental/college/university service, as well as help steward positive relationships with community partners across Southeast Texas and the Gulf Coast.
Essential Job Functions- Teach trumpet lessons, Studio, Rep & Ped, Chamber Music, Cardinal Brass Quintet, and other classes as needed.

Minimum and Desired QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:- Doctorate in Music (DMA or PhD); ABD is acceptable if the estimated completion date is no later than 08/31/2026.
- Evidence of successful university teaching.
- Record of ongoing creative/scholarly activity with an emerging regional and national profile.
- Versatility across styles and genres (such as jazz and commercial idioms).
Desired Qualifications:- Demonstrated success in recruiting and retaining university-level students, including evidence of studio growth and sustained engagement with public schools, private instructors, community partners, and professional networks.
- Experience in coaching college or university brass chamber music.
- Experience performing in an artist-level brass chamber music ensemble.
- Successful college/university experience teaching seminar or lecture courses in a secondary skill area.
- Active professional performance and recording portfolio as a trumpeter across various mediums such as solo, chamber, orchestral, pit/Broadway, jazz/commercial, studio/session, and related contexts.

- Coordinate studio visits, clinics, masterclasses, and on-campus events; represent the program at conferences and festivals.
Physical Requirements:- Able to lift 25 lbs. and be able to perform a variety of physical tasks, including lifting, bending, stooping, squatting, stair climbing, and walking between buildings.
