Job Overview
We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Minister of Music / Church Musician (Organist) to lead and inspire our congregation through the power of music. This vital role involves not only providing musical leadership during worship services but also fostering a vibrant musical environment that enhances spiritual growth and community engagement. Key Responsibilities Include:
- Lead and help shape the vision and mission of the Music Ministry in alignment with the church’s worship experience and pastoral leadership
- Play organ during Sunday worship services and church ministry functions
- Lead weekly Thursday choir rehearsal (7:00 PM to 8:30 PM), teaching music, vocal harmonies, and helping choir members strengthen musical confidence and participation
- Teach and reinforce three-part harmonies to choir members
- Demonstrate the ability to read and perform a variety of music styles including gospel, Christian contemporary, traditional hymns, and praise & worship music
- Introduce and teach new music to choir members, including providing lyrics/words for new songs as needed
- Create Sunday morning music lineups and coordinate musical flow for worship services
- Play during Sunday morning devotion and provide musical support during the sermon as led by the worship experience and pastor
- Collaborate with the Assistant Minister of Music, directing staff, musicians, and worship team regarding upcoming rehearsal selections and worship music planning
- Help recruit, encourage, and build choir engagement and participation over time
- Support up to two additional ministry events per month as needed (rehearsals, choir outings, special church services, funerals, ministry events, etc.). Additional compensation may be available for events exceeding expectations of the role
- Contribute to a worship atmosphere that inspires spiritual connection, excellence, and congregational engagement
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum of 3 years of church music leadership or church musician experience
- Strong ability to play the organ required
- Ability to read music, sight-read, or demonstrate strong familiarity with traditional gospel hymns, choir music, and worship arrangements
- Ability to teach choir members vocally, including three-part harmonies
- Strong knowledge of gospel, Christian contemporary, traditional hymns, and praise & worship music
- Ability to collaborate effectively with pastors, ministry leaders, musicians, and volunteers
- Ability to organize rehearsals and help prepare music ministry participants for worship services
- Strong communication skills and dependable attendance for rehearsals and worship services
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience serving in an African American church or gospel music tradition strongly preferred
- Keyboard/piano proficiency preferred but not required
- Prior experience helping grow or strengthen a church choir is preferred
POSITION DETAILS
- 1099 Independent Contractor Position
- Compensation: $300 to $400 weekly ($600 to $800 biweekly), based on experience and qualifications
- Paid biweekly
Weekly Schedule Includes:
- Thursday Choir Rehearsal: 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM
- Sunday Worship Service: 10:30 AM to 1:00 PM
- Up to two ministry related events monthly as needed
