- Required to safely remove all surface imperfections such as dents and scratches and perform each of the following operations (some operations are separated by a period of automated buffing), allowing the assembled instruments or components to be plated or lacquered without further surface refinement.
- Materials, supplies, components and instruments must be moved from previous or moved to subsequent production operations.
- Work procedures for these operations must follow standardized methods in a clearly prescribed sequence.
- Required to inspect work in process components and completed bells according to prescribed methods and measures.
- Buff (using an appropriate air wheel) and Color Buff (using an appropriate pocket buffing wheel) each individual tuning slide. These operations are performed, while standing, by applying thetuning slides (weighing up to 3 lbs), at various angles, to a rotating buffing wheel.
- Single buff (using an appropriate single section buffing wheel), and manually “rag” (typically the area around the valve section) assembled instruments or components. Buffing operations are generally performed, while standing, by applying each individual assembled instrument (weighing up to 25 lbs.) or related components at various angles to a rotating buffing wheel.
- Blend (using an appropriate “broken-down” buffing wheel) assembled instruments or components. These operations are performed, while standing, by applying each individual assembled instrument (weighing up to 25 lbs.) or related components at various angles to a rotating buffing wheel.
- Buffing compounds are routinely applied to the rotating buffing wheels. These operations require employees to set-up the lathe and corresponding buffing wheels and may require several wheel changes.
- Manual “ragging” operations are generally performed, while standing, at a stationary buffing mantel. These manual “ragging” operations require employees to maneuver strips of cloth into areas of the instruments that cannot be safely reached with a rotating buffing wheel. These manual “ragging” operations require employees to set-up the mantel and prepare all ragging strips according to prescribed methods.
