Position Overview
Calvary Christian School is seeking a full-time Performing Arts Teacher with a strong background in both music and theatre, who is comfortable working with students from TK through 8th grade. This individual should be passionate about the performing arts, highly collaborative, flexible, and organized, with a desire to cultivate creativity and confidence in students.
The Performing Arts Teacher will collaborate closely with a team of performing arts specialists to execute a comprehensive program that includes music and theatre instruction as well as choral & musical theatre performances.
Key Responsibilities
Instruction and Curriculum
- Teach foundational and advanced concepts in music and theatre to students in TK–8th grade
- Incorporate music fundamentals, including rhythm, pitch, vocal technique, and basic music literacy
- Provide instruction in acting techniques, voice, movement, and character development
- Integrate elements of musical theater, including singing, acting, and movement
- Adapt lessons to meet diverse student needs and abilities
- Foster creativity through playwriting, improvisation, and performance-based learning
Performances and Productions
- Produce and stage major school performances, which include, but are not limited to:
- 8th Grade Musical
- Christmas and Spring Sing Concerts (TK - 5th)
- Grade Level Musicals (TK-4th)
- After School Musical (3rd-8th)
- Lead students through the full production process, including auditions, casting, rehearsals, and performances
- Collaborate on music instruction, choreography, staging, and other stagecraft elements (i.e. set design, props, lighting, and sound) as needed
- Organize and facilitate production logistics with quick turnaround times
Program Development and Collaboration
- Collaborate with performing arts colleagues to implement a cohesive TK–8 program
- Contribute creative ideas and innovative approaches to curriculum and productions
- Support and/or lead an after-school performing arts program
- Work closely with faculty and administration to support school-wide events and performances
Student Development
- Encourage confidence, teamwork, and self-expression through performance
- Create a positive, inclusive classroom environment rooted in Christian values
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree (preferably in Music, Theatre, or a Performing Arts-related field)
- Experience teaching or working with children (TK–8 preferred)
- Background in music/musical theatre
- Ability to read sheet music and play piano (preferred)
- Experience directing productions and/or working in stage production
- Strong classroom management and organizational skills
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
- A personal commitment to Christian education and values
Preferred Skills
- Experience with vocal direction and/or choir directing
- Ability to lead and accompany choral classes from piano
- Training in music or theatre education
- Ability to write or adapt scripts/music for school productions
- Production Management
- Experience working with rented theater/performance spaces
- Experience working with contracted lighting, sound, and costume rental vendors.
- Building and executing rehearsal schedules and meeting deadlines
