Position Title: Full-Time Music Director
Organization: First Presbyterian Church
Location: Mount Vernon, Indiana
Reports To: Adult Pastor / Head of Staff
Position Summary
First Presbyterian Church is seeking an experienced, spiritually grounded, and musically gifted Full-Time Music Director to lead and develop a vibrant music ministry that enhances congregational worship and fosters spiritual growth. The Music Director will provide leadership for the church’s choral and instrumental music programs, collaborate with pastoral staff in worship planning, and cultivate participation across all age groups.
A key focus of this role is the recruitment and development of both Youth/Adult Choirs, strengthening intergenerational participation in the musical life of the congregation.
Primary Responsibilities
Worship Leadership
- Plan, coordinate, and lead music for weekly worship services and special services throughout the liturgical year.
- Select music in collaboration with the pastor that reflects the theological themes of worship and the traditions of the church.
- Direct the adult choir in weekly rehearsals and Sunday worship.
- Provide musical leadership for seasonal services including Advent, Christmas, Lent, Holy Week, and Easter.
- Coordinate and rehearse instrumentalists and soloists as needed.
Choir Development
- Recruit, develop, and direct Youth/Adult Choir(s), creating opportunities for enhanced worship and possible participation in the life of the Church
- Foster a welcoming and spiritually enriching rehearsal environment that supports both musical excellence and Christian fellowship.
- Encourage congregational participation in singing and musical engagement.
Program Administration
- Organize regular rehearsal schedules for all choirs.
- Maintain and develop the church’s music library and related resources.
- Coordinate music for special events, concerts, and church celebrations.
- Manage the music ministry budget in coordination with church leadership.
- Recruit and mentor volunteers who participate in the music ministry.
Collaboration and Leadership
- Work closely with pastoral staff and worship planning teams to integrate music into the overall life of the church.
- Participate in church staff meetings and contribute to the mission and ministry of the congregation.
- Provide leadership and vision for the growth and future development of the church’s music ministry.
- Active engagement with the community.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience in church music leadership and choral directing.
- Strong conducting, vocal coaching, and rehearsal leadership skills.
- Ability to recruit, develop, and inspire singers of varying ages and skill levels.
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with pastoral staff, volunteers, and church leadership.
- Bachelor’s degree in Music, Church Music, or a related field preferred (or equivalent experience).
- Strong personal faith and alignment with Presbyterian values and beliefs.
- Keyboard proficiency (piano, organ, etc.)

Work Schedule
This is a full-time position that includes:
- Sunday worship services
- Weekly rehearsals
- Seasonal services and special programs
- Participation in staff meetings and planning sessions
Compensation
Compensation is commensurate with experience and qualifications and includes a full-time salary and benefits package as determined by the church.
Salary: $40,000
Benefits: negotiable
4 weeks vacation
